The sharpness of the blades vary somewhat Europeans. Actually not even need a sharp edge to make a huge amount of damage with a sword. European swords were fairly sharp. Some originals, like their Eastern counterparts, remain extremely strong and is easily able to shave the hair, paper cutting, etc. Far from me to dispute my esteemed colleague warty, but the vast majority of European sword blades were actually sharp from tip to tang. The technique of "half-swording" or grab the blade with one hand is a very specialized maneuver.
